Controlling greenhouse diseases

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

Gardening in a greenhouse can be fun but if a disease hits, it can be worrying. First, what is wrong with your plants ? and secondly how do you cure it without having a detrimental effect on the balance of nature that you have created in your Greenhouse?.

Apart from the diseases specific to the plants you are growing in your greenhouse, there are six main diseases that are general.

Greenhouse supply companies, nurseries, and garden centers will always give advice about specific problems you may be having

Damping Off In The Greenhouse

If you are new to Greenhouse gardening, this is the most likely problem you are first going to face. Young plants, usually seedlings, just topple over and die, though sometimes this fungal disease shows itself as a blackened area at the base of the stem. The first thing you know about it is when your young healthy seedlings just keel over and die. The plants are already dead, so there can be no cure. Prevention, however, is possible. Sometimes the disease is carried in the soil and you should steralize the soil by heating to kill it. Always steralize pots and trays before use. Raising the temperature in the greenhouse can help, as can sowing more thinly, and watering less. Some gardeners add fungicide to watering to stop the spread if they have encountered this problem.

Botrytis In The Greenhouse

Grey Mould is the more common name for this disease. It is quite a common fungal disease and symtoms are a dirty-white or grey-brown mould on leaves and stems. You may have already met this disease since it also afects plants grown in the garden.Botrytis grows in low temperatures and poor ventilation. Affected leaves and stems wil not recover.Infected parts should be burned and never put on the compost. Then increase the temperature in your greenhouse and provide better ventilation.

Mildew In The Greenhouse

Mildew is a white powdery coating on leaves which causes them to pucker and become distorted. Affected leaves will not recover, so remove them as son as you see affected leaves and burn them. Leaving them on or around the plant will encourage the disease to spread. Unlike Damping Off and Botrytis, mildew is most likely to occur if the soil is to dry, so make sure your plants never go short of water. If the mildew is whide spread, then water with copper fungacide or dispersible sulpher.

Blight In The Greenhouse

Blight is shown as brown marks on fruit and leaves. The marks may spread and turn black. Immediately remove and burn all parts of plants that exhibit symptoms. If the disease persists, spray with copper fungicide.

Leaf Mould In The Greenhouse

Brown mould and yellow spots on leaves are indications of laef mould. Poor ventilation is the most likely caise. Improve ventilation by adjusting vents, and give your plants much more space.

Virus Diseases In The Greenhouse

Virus Disease afects many plants including tomatoes and cucumbers. They exhibit a number of symptoms including a “fern-like” appearance, or yellow mottling of the leaves. The leaves may also wilt badly, then appear to recover in the morning only to wilt again the next day. Loss of vigour and poor cropping will occur.
There is no cure! Affected plants should be removed and burned. If you get virus attacks on plants set in the ground, then you should use growbags for a few years. Virus disease is spread by insects, garden tools and by hand, so be extra careful about hygene.

Diseases in the Greenhouse may seem daunting, and most of us will sufer from them from time to time. However, if you look at your plants regularly, you will spot the symptoms early and will be able to take the measuires necessary to prevent widespread attacks. Most of these diseases are preventable by the right watering and ventilation and this really only comes with experience. So don’t be too concerned. Enjoy your greenhouse gardening and deal with problems as they come.

How To Keep Earthworms As Pets

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

Imagine having a pet that does not bark at all hours of the night, use the toilet on your favorite carpet and make a complete mess of your garden. Well earthworms can be a savior for your garden! Granted, they are not the most cuddly pets, but they certainly are interesting ones.

Keeping earthworms can be a very interesting experience. These amazing creatures will teach you a lot about the decomposition of organic waste. Earthworms are fairly easy creatures to keep, the most important thing you have to remember is to keep their bedding moist, but not soggy, all the time. This is because earthworms breathe through their sides, and they need the moisture to breathe. Never allow the worm bin to dry out as they will suffocate without the moisture they need to breathe! When we talk about a bin, we speak of the container you will keep your worm farm in. Another important thing to remember is to not overfeed the earthworms. Doing this will make the worm bin acidic, which is fatal for the worms. Keep everything in moderation, too much water will make the bin soggy, you do not want it to be soggy, but only moist. If you put too much food in the bin, it will turn acidic. If the bin smells acidic, you will need to remove some of the food immediately and place more bedding in the bin to equalize the ratio.

Now you need to know what to feed your pet worms? Anything organic that you can get your hands on! This can be food scraps that are preferably organic, such as fruit and vegetables and even eggshells. Most kinds of manure are acceptable, except human of course! Newspaper and shredded cardboard are excellent bedding options for a worm bin. You can also add garden trimmings such as leaves and twigs into your worm bin, but remember not to overfeed your worms! You must never feed the worms artificial foods, dairy products, meat, bones, sugar, salt or vinegar. These food products are bad for your worms and will kill them.

Keeping earthworms as pets can be an interesting and educational experience, and they are relatively easy to maintain. Your worms will also be of great benefit to your garden if you decide to use them for fertilization purposes. The earthworms will reproduce greatly, so you will have a lot of composted earth to work on your garden with. The earthworm compost can even be used in your home’s pot plants. All in all, fairly granted they are not the cuddliest of pets, but they sure are the most useful.

Tips For Using Microclimates For More Creative Landscaping

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

No matter where you live and regardless of the weather in your area, your property and gardens will have their own specific microclimate which is created because of several different local factors. Among many influences, these factors include the direction your property sits, it’s protection from wind, how sunny or shady the property is, and how much slope there is. So along with your average local conditions, your microclimate is an important consideration in your landscape design.

Any structures that you place on your property could have an immediate effect on its microclimate. All your landscaping and garden ideas could easily be effected by just one placement. A house can create a windbreak that alters the flow of air around it. There will be a warm area and a colder one created on either side of the building; and shade at certain times of the day. Walls and fences both have an effect on a property just the same as natural elements like trees and hedges.

Immediate area temperature changes depend a lot on the composition of the soil surface. Some surfaces, like bitumen, attract so much heat that you can’t walk on them in the heat of the summer. And the heat they produce is even felt in the air above. On the other hand, concrete surfaces keep fairly cool. All landscaping ideas will be effected differently by different elements. Grass areas are always cool with the soil temperature under it being influenced by the length of the grass. Temperature changes like this can help you grow warmth loving plants like semi tropical and some tropical varieties. Surfaces that heat up during the day will release the heat slowly throughout the night. This effect can sometimes prevent frost damage in areas that are susceptible.

To help reduce wind in any landscape or garden, a barrier or block of some type is usually necessary. It’s been noticed how wind barriers such as solid wood fencing makes areas of turbulence on both sides of the fence. This is common knowledge to most landscaping companies. The best sort of barriers are the ones that allow some air flow. Such a barrier will act as a filter. Lightly foliaged trees or a spaced board fence will often provide an effective wind barrier.

Water has varying effects on microclimate. It helps create a more stable air temperature depending on the size of the pond. A pond reflects light, so plants around a pond will tend to get more light as well as water than those planted in other areas. However, while a pond has a cooling effect on a hot summer’s day, it can have a positively chilling effect in winter, so you have to remember this when deciding where to place a pond in your garden.

Both humans and vegetation do well when you give your microclimates some thought and propper planning.

Garden Hand Tools – The Perfect Gift for the Gardener in Your Life

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

Garden tool sets can be a great gift, or just an easy way to get started gardening on your own. There are a wide variety of garden tool sets to consider, so with that in mind here are some tool types that you might want to ensure are part of your garden tool collection.

Garden tool sets are a popular gift for the gardener in your life. They are also a quick and easy way to get started gardening on your own. Garden tools sets come in many sizes with many types of hand tools for the gardener.  Here are some things to look for when buying tools for gardeners.

The number of tools can vary a bit. The smaller tool sets will have just 3 tools or so, but the options go up, and some will have twelve to fifteen tools included. The price of a tool set will vary based on factors like the number of tools, so have in mind a target price to help guide your selection.

Look at the handles of the tools.  This will give you a good idea of the overall quality of the set. Plastic handled tools are often the least expensive, but unfortunately they can also feature the poorest workmanship, with cheap, weak stamped tool bodies as an example. One classic material is a wooden handle that’s often used because they last a long time and feel good in your hands. Some of the more expensive tools come with high tech foams and other materials that conform well to the shape of the hand, and can help alleviate discomfort for those with joint pains.

The tools that come with a garden set vary, but there are a few included in almost all sets. A favorite is the garden trowel. These look like Lilliputian spade, and have a multitude of uses like digging the hole for a small transplant, adding the fertilizer to that hole, or simply harvesting smaller root crop like beets. Check that the body is not stamped from a sheet of metal, as these will often bend and even break under the stress of normal gardening.

A bulb planter looks like a narrow trowel, and is used in much the same way as a trowel, but is used to plant items that are smaller but still need a deep hole like flower bulbs.

A garden fork, sometimes known as a cultivator, has hooked tines on it and is used to work the surface of the soil.  Handy for weeding a small area, it can also be used to prepare a garden bed for smaller seeds like radishes or carrots.

Pruners are popular in garden tool sets. Typically these sets will include a bypass pruner, which is often the preferred pruner for smaller cuts like pruning vegetable vines and flower cuttings.

A garden tool set will come with a variety of holders. Some are in a simple plastic holder, but the more popular include a more rugged leather holster, or for larger sets a carrying case. These cases will sometimes have molded inserts for the tools, and the best cases are made of wood.

Finally, a garden utility cart can be a good gift. Often these are a blessing for some older gardeners, who find they can’t do as much bending and stooping as they once could. One popular type of garden cart has a small seat as the top of the cart so you can sit and work without a lot of bending.

Considerations In Buying A Greenhouse

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

If you are thinking of buying a greenhouse, there are a number of decisions you need to make before you do so. You have probably decided where you want to site your greenhouse and this should be within reach of the house in order to connect any needed services, and should be in a sunny position.Whether you are buying a greenhouse or are going to build your own greenhouse, the following information still applies.

The site for your greenhouse will dictate to some extent the shape of it. There are now a greater number of shapes for greenhouses than there ever has been. You still have a huge choice of styles even if you are buying a manufactured greenhouse. There is the tradiional “barn” shape with four vertical sides and a span rof with a central ridge. Then there are the range of circular greenhouses. These are usually multi-sided, rather than actually circular. They usually have six or eight sides and although they are the most attractive in design, they are not as space efficient as the traditional style.

With the advent of better plastics, greenhouses no longer need to be made of glass. However, You may need to replace some of these more frequently since some older plastics may become brittle with time.Do you want to use aluminium or wooden frames?. Sice wood is naturally an insulator, the wooden framed greenhouse can be cheaper to heat. They certainly look nicer. If you do choose a wooden construction, then remember that when carrying out the regular maintenace, you should not use creosote based preservatives in the greenhouse since that can be toxic for some plants.

The next decision you will need to make is the flooring. This is especially important if you are buying a ready made greenhouse. You need to decide whether you want to grow plants in the ground in your greenhouse or whether you will use pots and growbags. Although pots and growbags can restrict roots systems, they do prevent a build up of any infections.

Floors made of concrete act as a reservoir for heat, which reduces your heating bills. If you want to grow plants in the groound, you can still use concrente slabs either just in the middle as a path or all over, leaving patches for growing plants.

Don’t forget the ventilation. In order to maintain the best possible growing conditions, you need to keep as regular a temperature as possible. You also need air movement to prevent a number of deseases. The conventional way of doing this is by vents in the roof. A 2 x 2,5m (6 x 8ft) greenhouse should have trw vents and other sizes need the number of vents adjusted to match the size. Polythene greenhouses are difficult to ventilate. It is difficult yo install ventilation panels in polythene structures, and condensation is a big problem.Mesh Panels fitted along the grenhouse base, and in the doors will cut down the condensation and help with ventilation.

These factors need to be addressed whether you are building a greenhouse or buying one ready made. The wrong decision will cost you dearly and will take away a great deal  of the pleasure of greenhouse gardening.

Greenhouse gardening gives you a whole new aspect to your gardening. It can be one of the most satisfying things you do, so think carefully about it before you commit – and get it right.

Avoiding Your Lawn From Damaging By Dallas Lawn Care

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

There are top pointers to care for your lawn.  Equally as important as lawn care tips are the grass care mistakes that we should know how to avoid.  Lawn care and maintenance takes more than the usual cutting and watering.

Here are the top 10 lawn care mistakes that many people make.  Some are so common that we think it’s just normal, when in truth it is actually damaging to your lawn.

1.  Cutting the turf too short.  Many of us would like to save time in cutting our gardens so we choose to chop them too short.  This will give us a longer break between mows, but this doesn’t bode well for your lawn.  The idea here is that removing more than a 3rd of a grass blade will weaken its root system.  This could continuously result to future lawn Problems.

2.  No or little preparation on the planting technique and strategies.  Keep in mind that plants grow better when they are planted at the appropriate depth and spacing.  Naturally, this will require some research about the plant and its most favorable conditions and some preparations to take better care of it.  Conducting soil tests is very topical because the pH balance can help determine which type of grass is best to grow on your lawn.

3.  Disregarding the difference between mature plants and the young ones.  It may not appear to be a gigantic thing, but noting which plants are new and which are mature is significant.  This concern involves the water intake of the plants.  The water wants of the new and young plants tend to be bigger.  They need more water and they could need to be in a sun condition different from that of the mature and established plants.

4.  Watering and fertilizing at the wrong time and schedule.  A watering schedule is recommended for householders who want to maintain a healthy lawn.  Watering amounts will depend upon the seasonal changes, the weather and climate, and the area.  Generally, the ideal time to water your lawn would be early in the morning, when you will have the least amount of evaporation.  Timing and scheduling also is applicable to fertilizing you lawn.  Depending on your location, fertilization of the grass varies.

5.  Ignoring the importance of mulch.  Mulch is critical for lawn care and upkeep due to its assorted uses.  Mulching can help add or keep nutrient elements in your soil, repel insects, control weeds, and can reduce manure wants by a 3rd.

6.  Mistaking when to use seed and sod.  Most homeowners choose one or the other based on the amount of time to build a lawn.  The truth is, you must choose between seeding or sodding by the its most advantageous purpose in lawn care.  Sodding helps against soil erosion and is the most efficient in building a new lawn.  Seeding is better in filling openings and bare parts of a lawn.

7. Using powder products and “green” products.  Power products might be cheaper but they can get blown away before it can get into the soil.  Using organic products, or “green” products, can be time-consuming since it takes more time to work and plenty of applications are needed to get results.

we are able to see that these are all normal mistakes.  But we are able to also see how each of these lawn care mistakes can hinder us from making a great and healthy lawn.

What You’ll Need For Your Own Homemade Hydroponic System

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

If you’re looking for something a bit different then creating your own homemade hydroponic system is a great alternative to a traditional garden. A hydroponic garden offers flexibility and convenience, not to mention ease of use, as you can grow your plants anywhere in your house in a nutrient solution instead of soil. Another advantage of a homemade hydroponic garden is that it can produce larger crops in less space without having to worry about issues such as soil quality and garden size.

To get you started with your homemade hydroponic system you’ll need a container to put your plants into. How big it is will depend on the number of plants you’re planning to grow and their size. You can use anything from bucket to an ice cream container or even an old fish tank. You just need to make sure that any translucent material is blacked out to stop the sunlight getting through to the roots of your plants and the container is clean. This will also help stop algae forming and damaging your plants. The next thing you’ll have to think about is what you’ll use to grow your plants in.

A homemade hydroponic system uses a nutrient solution instead of soil to give your plants everything they need to thrive. You can use water and nutrient solution or some people prefer to also use a growing medium such as rockwool, perlite or sand to house the roots, water and nutrient solution. You can find these supplies at any good gardening store and if you’re not sure what would suit your homemade hydroponic system there should be someone on the know you can ask on staff.

What kind of plants you grow is really up to you. You can grow fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers with a homemade hydroponic system. Certain types of plants grow particularly well in a hydroponic garden and if you are unsure you can ask what seeds to buy at your local gardening store or alternatively you can buy a hydroponic kit which will contain everything you need to get started.

To complete your homemade hydroponic system you will need a pump to get the oxygen to the roots of your plants and a grow light to supply adequate light so your plants undergo photosynthesis and can grow properly. What size pump and grow light you need basically depends on the size of the container and the type of plants you’re growing. Again you could ask for advice at your local gardeing store or else search online. Just make sure that you get accurate information if looking online.

Having a homemade hydroponic system will open up a whole new world of gardening for you. You can grow great plants with minimal fuss. Hydroponic gardens are perfect for people with a busy lifestyle and with a little effort you can have a great garden. Happy gardening!

The Advantages of a Hydroponics Greenhouse

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

Normally, when people decide to start hydroponic gardening, they will set up a system wherever they have some extra space, such as the basement. However most people would not be willing to permit their hydroponic garden to overtake the house. So if you plan on carrying on with hydroponic gardening, you ought to consider getting a greenhouse for your plants.

Growing your plants in a greenhouse is preferable in many ways to just setting them up in an unused area of your home. In a greenhouse, it is much less difficult to maintain just the right conditions for a growing garden. Temperature, ventilation and lighting are all less difficult to control. Also, a hydroponic garden will involve systems for irrigation and lighting which require sufficient room to install. You can install this equipment precisely where you need it in a greenhouse. This is essential because regulation of water and light are more important in hydroponics than in a regular garden.

The primary advantage of growing a hydroponic garden in a greenhouse is lighting. A hydroponic garden won’t thrive unless it gets the right amount of light. Although if there is too much light, algae will thrive, and this is not something that is desirable. In a greenhouse setting, daylight is filtered and diffused naturally. Shades and shutters will regulate the quantity of light as well as the angle at which it enters the structure. Moreover, you will save on energy costs since there is no need for round the clock hydroponic lights.

When you have a greenhouse, you’ll see that the system for providing nutrients to your plants is easier to set up and maintain. This is in fact a very important factor in your hydroponic plants’ health. Because your garden isn’t soil based, the pH level is more likely to rise and fall. The reason you’ll see variations in alkalinity and acidity is because they are both water based. It is easy to set up an automatic system to control the pH levels in a greenhouse. Hence, you are not continually checking the levels.

When growing plants hydroponically, remember that correct temperature control is an important concern. The temperatures for your garden can be kept in an acceptable range in a well built greenhouse without the use of heaters, even in a chilly climate. If you dwell in a region that experiences cold weather yet has lots of sun, this is particularly pertinent. Fans and vents can also be installed that will further help to control the temperature inside your greenhouse.

While many greenhouses can be bought in packages, you also have the alternative of constructing one of your own. You can find them in a wide array of styles and dimensions. There are also styles that will accommodate expansion if you decide to increase the size of your indoor garden. As you can see, a lot of worthwhile factors exist for making use of a greenhouse for hydroponic gardening.
