Indoor Gardening - The Most Challenging Practical Advice

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

There is hardly any home or company untouched by the beauty of flowers and decorative plants. Indoor gardening is not necessarily an art, as it takes little time and effort. There are however people who have pushed the concept of indoor gardening a lot further, coming to actually grow vegetables inside. Such projects depend on artificial lighting systems, which does not allow weeds to proliferate as much as sunlight. Plus, the gardener has a direct influence on the soil, in the absence of the weather influence.

Indoor gardening depends on containers or pots made either from plastic or from ceramic materials. Plastic has the inconvenience of getting hot, which is why most gardeners prefer ceramic materials with some form of drainage at the bottom to let water flow away. Most challenges with indoor gardening comes from the preparation of the soil, although opinions are greatly divided. Different or equal proportions of ingredients need to be added, such as sharp coarse sand, peat moss and native soil.

Another type of soil mix for indoor gardening contains forest mulch, perlite, silica and sand in an equal volume. The conditions change if your vegetables grow in hanging containers because you have to keep them lightweight normally relying on some premixed soils. From this point of view, indoor gardening costs more because the soil mixture influences costs. But, once again, the extent to which you perform indoor gardening matters a lot.

Besides soil, another issue worth considering is that of containers. They should have proper drainage and aeration. In order to water the plants without any problem, you should leave some two inches between the soil level and the margin of the container. As for the gardening cycles, most people will stick to the same routine as with outdoor gardening. Yet, since there are no weather changes, you can grow plants directly from seeds.

Cherry tomatoes and herbs are among the favorite to grow by indoor gardening. They look nice, they are very attractive and the fragrance is great. Rosemary, chives and mint make indoor gardening a lot more pleasant. The arrangement of shelves, tables and plant stands can further enhance the beauty of the garden.

What You May Need To Know About Green House Gardening

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

Green house gardening allows for the cultivation of vegetables, ornamental plants and flowers that cannot be grown outside because of the climate conditions. To many enthusiasts green house gardening is a dream they hope to turn into reality one day. Here are the most general lines that define this occupation.

1.The greenhouse is a chamber of plastic or glass that allows the light to get through to the plants while providing enough warmth to allow for the harmonious development regardless of the external weather conditions. Green house gardening is challenging by the high number of activities required to keep the green house operational.

2.Regular beds, hanging baskets or containers can be freely used for green house gardening objectives. Whether the facility is lucrative or decorative, the size matters very little. The cultivation of plants all year round seems simpler than ever when the flowers, plans and vegetables do not get exposed to the direct action of the elements.

3.Green house gardening has many objectives. Maintaining the productive nature of seasonal corps all year round is a major achievement and many gardeners aim at it. Others just want to cultivate plants that are sensitive to the cold weather or they try to get good seeds. And finally, a warm green house could be specialized strictly in  the cultivation and display of rare plants.

The conditions for green house gardening vary depending on the temperature of the environment.

-A cheap method is cold green house gardening. It works fine in summer time as the heat trapped inside the chamber accelerates the growth of the plants. Too much humidity could nevertheless be detrimental for plants.

-Cool green house gardening is much more common. Normally a steady temperature is preserved by using some sort of heating system. Many plants are thus capable to resist throughout winter without any inconvenience. The temperature inside is around 45F

-Warm green house gardening is conducted at temperatures of 55F or higher and it is usually specific to the cultivation of exotic plants, fruits and vegetables. Warm greenhouses usually serve for professional purposes and they require a considerable investment in technologies.

Lots of other features can be identified for the above mentioned categories but they should be studied in particular with all the issues that derive from them.

Gardening Shoes Information Which You May What To Know

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

Comfort and safety make gardening shoes practical in the first place. They don’t look great but they certainly make a better choice than an old pair of shoes in which you get wet. People who spend a lot of time in their garden know how many pairs of shoes they can ruin while doing things around the house.

Gardening shoes slip on and off without any difficulty. This means that they can be used only when absolutely needed. Then, they have to be waterproof by all means so as to protect you on rainy days or when you use the hose to water the flowers. The cheapest gardening shoes are made of rubber, and they work just fine for the purpose. Only buy solid gardening shoes because you can easily injury your feet outdoors. There are thorns, branches and even debris that could hurt you if you don’t have a good protection from the footwear.

As for colors, that is not a problem. Some users will choose dull-looking gardening shoes while others will enjoy brightly colored footwear. That is totally your choice. The alternative to gardening shoes are the rubber boots. They become necessary when you work in a lot of water, dirt or mud. Most models go well above the ankle up to the knee, helping you stay warm and protecting your pants too, not from dirt but most precisely from moisture.

Get both gardening shoes and boots around the house because you will certainly use both types of footwear. Together with gardening gloves, rubber shoes and other similar accessories can be purchased in local department stores or they can be ordered on the Internet. Normally, you’ll pay less for rubber than for Gore-Tex, and there is hardly any point in buying some sophisticated type of gardening shoes. This means that rubber gardening shoes still predominate in the customers’ preferences.

Change them whenever there are serious signs of deterioration; they will seldom be worn for a whole year. Rubber does have a limited resistance. Yet, the expense is minimum for such cheap items. Change the gardening shoes if they have holes or cuts because water may get inside causing discomfort.

Save My Hydrangeas!

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

If you want your hydrangeas to bloom like gang busters then you better get some garden knowledge under your belt fast. Hydrangeas are difficult to prune. Hydrangea flower color is effected by soil treatment and fertilizer. Hydrangeas can be so picky about the light conditions that they prefer. The following tips are intended to assist you in pruning and caring for your hydrangeas for optimal bloom.

Hydrangeas come in several varieties. One type is called hydrangea arborescence which usually have big white snow balls on them-these hydrangeas bloom on “new” wood. Because hydrangea arborescence varieties bloom on “new” wood they can be pruned in the fall. These hydrangeas bloom on the new growth that comes up in the spring. The popular tree like hydrangeas are also white and are called paniculata hydrangeas and they benefit from fall pruning. Follow this simple rule: bloom white, prune in autumn.

It gets more complicated when you realize that there are other kinds of hydrangeas called hydrangea macrophyllas-these are the kind of hydrangeas that have lovely magenta to bright blue flowers Hydrangea macrophyllas bloom on “old” wood and can ONLY be pruned before Mid-July the year before. Do not fret about how difficult this might seem?Let’s not forget oakleaf hydrangeas which are “old” wood growth bloomers. When is the optimal time to prune?? The summer before.

There are a few things you need to do in order to promote your hydrangea macrophyllas to bloom in pink or blue. If you want blue you need to acidify the soil and add aluminum to the soil. You can use pine needles, and throw down a bunch of pennies or rusty nails(yeah, my thought exactly)to help acheive this. It is hard work to effectively change soil pH in a garden and often does not work. Less acidic soil will promote your hydrangea plant to produce pinker blooms. Incidentally if you can’t get them to bloom in exactly the right color you were hoping for you can always put a few gazing balls on decorative stands in the hydrangea bushes in blue or pink to get the color that way. These will look pretty and provide the hint of color you were attempting to get minus all the hard work.

Hydrangeas have very special light requirements and can look bad if they are not in the right spot. Partial shade is recommended for hydrangea plants. Hydrangeas can of course survive in full sun, but they will look terrible. They will live in full shade, but they won’t look good in full shade. Hydrangeas do best when they are plante in a spot that gets AM sun and afternnoon shade. And as the name suggests they do not do well in drought(dry) conditions so remember to water them regularly and they should grow so abundantly you can use them as a hedge to hide an unsightly air conditioning unit, or plant them around the base of a bird feeder to hide all the spent seeds.

These tips are meant to help you achieve all your hydrangea bloom dreams. It is imprtant to have some information about what hydrangea plant you have before you prune or plant it. All you have to do is memorize these simple tips and you will have lovely hydrangeas flowers in your garden too.

Irrigation for Lawn and Garden

Get Your FREE Herb Gardening Mini-Course - Limited Time Only!

When it comes to home improvement projects, there simply isn’t anything you can do to your home that will add as much value and appeal as quickly and dramatically as a well planned landscaping project will.  A well designed landscape does much more than just give your home curb appeal.  With landscaping you can make your house more energy efficient, improve the privacy or your property and make your home more safe.

Every bit as important as the landscaping scheme itself is the irrigation plan that will keep your investment looking green and vibrant for years to come.  Irrigation should be a part of the plan, not an afterthought.  After all, it is much easier to put in a sprinkler system before you have your expensive plants and other features in place than to try to add one later.

There are essentially three primary types of irrigation, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.  Understanding each type will help you in selecting which irrigation system is most suited to your needs and the needs of your landscape.  Your landscape project will, most likely, take years to fully develop and reach its full potential as you envision it.  Your irrigation system is essential tool in helping you achieve that vision.

The most common type of irrigation system is the underground sprinkler system.  An underground system allows you to keep your investment healthy and happy without  requiring an exorbitant amount of time.  The drawback to this underground, timed irrigation systems is that they use more water.  Even the newer, more conservative systems still use more water than would be used by manually watering.

Another type of automated system, the aboveground drip line, offers better water efficiency.  These systems water deeply, which helps to promote root growth for stronger, healthier plants.  However, because these systems are aboveground, they are much more visible and don’t offer the aesthetic appeal of underground pop-up sprinkler systems. Also, being exposed above the ground makes them more susceptible to damage.

Manual watering is, hands down, the most effective method of irrigation.  By either using a mobile sprinkler or a garden hose attachment you have complete control over water delivery.  You don’t have to worry about watering too much or too little, and you can control water deliver to plants that require more water or less water, instead of having everything watered equally.  This definitely helps save money when the water bill comes in, but it requires time on your part.  If you have constraints on your time, then an automated system will probably benefit you and your landscape.

Understanding these basic types of irrigation systems is an important part of the landscape planning process.  Underestimating the water needs of your project, or you ability to meet those needs could prove disastrous.  Nothing is more costly than having to go back after the fact to dig up your project and install an irrigation system.  Planning for irrigation now can save you a tremendous setback further down the line.
