There is nothing like fresh herbs when you’re cooking, many however, lack the area needed to grow their own. Growing herbs in pots is a great way to get the fresh herbs you want. You don’t have to be just an apartment dweller to use pots to grow herbs they are perfect for home dwellers that just don’t have a lot of yard space or just prefer pots to tearing up their yard. An added benefit to putting your herbs in pots versus the ground directly is you can have fresh herbs year round.

Growing herbs in pots can be a great way to have fresh seasonings. One of the first things you need to consider is what size pot you want to use. While smaller pots are easier to move they don’t necessarily hold the variety of herbs you might like, to achieve the variety you’ll have to have a lot of pots. That being said, using bigger pots can give you a wider array of herbs in one pot but they might be heavy and hard to move around, or you might simply not have room for them. The things to take into consideration when choosing your pot size is are these herbs going to be outside herbs (moving them inside during the cooler months), how much room do you have for pots (do you have a spot for a large pot or is space limited) and if you intend to move them frequently (larger pots can be much heavier and a pain to move).

Once you’ve decided on what size pot(s) you are going to use and the type of herbs you are planting, its time to plant the herbs. If you are planting several types of herbs in the same pot you might consider planting similar herbs together. Plant herbs that will be used for Italian cooking together, Mexican cooking together and so on, it’ll make things easier for you when you go to harvest them later.

When growing herbs in pots, you want to begin by filling the pot two-thirds of the way full with good potting soil. Add the herbs to the pot. You don’t want to put them on top of each other, be sure to give them a little space. Then finish filling the pot up with more soil and top with mulch. You want to make sure that your pot has adequate drainage; you don’t want your herbs to drown.

Growing herbs in pots is a wonderful way to add fresh flavor to your cooking and, when grown indoors, can add character to a room.
